After messing around with Moai SDK and lua last night, I out of boredom wrote a simple lua compiler in it (luac? what’s that?) and so here’s that Pinkie screensaver some of you wanted. Above taken-with-a-potato photo shows it in action.

1. Download and extract
2. Open the containing folder and execute run.bat
3. Pinkies everywhere
4. Close it by moving the mouse over it or pressing any key while active

Should work on any 32bit or 64bit installation of Windows XP or greater (see exact system requirements for Moai here). I can make it for Mac OS X (10.6 or greater) sometime next week (if there’s any demand for it), as I currently have no access to a Mac that can run and build Moai.

Optionally change the settings in config.lua (open it using notepad or similar), and make the settings match your monitor’s resolution (it defaults to 1680x1050). You can also change the intensivity of Pinkie duplication etc.

Unfortunately I can’t think of a simple solution to how to actually set it as a screensaver without much hassle, though I’ve included a link to some possible ones in the README file. Also it’s limited to only one screen, so multi-monitor setups for it are out of the question.

As April 1st is over, I guess I can shed some light into the video I did.

For quite some while now (over several months on and off), I’ve been working a game framework built on Moai SDK. Nearing the completion with some of the core features, I figured I could make a game with it. The original intentions were to use the framework for a (non-pony) project between me and my friends, but since that wasn’t going anywhere I decided to make something on my own. Looking through some of my old projects, I found some ideas for a pony game I had started somewhere around the beginning of S2, and decided to run with that.

We’ll see when I get around posting more about it.

Quick checklist of things:
- The song during Pinkies’ march is Pinkie Glee by David Larsen (used with permission). The other song was the Teletubbies theme.
- Tools used are Notepad++ (writing the game logic in lua), Visual Studio 2010 (editing Moai’s C++ source code), TexturePacker (creating texture atlases for animations), and Flash (animations etc).
- It’s most probably gonna be a platformer, as if we don’t have tons of those around. Although I’m treating this as a platformer test for a future game I want to get around making.

ps. I don’t think it’s a possibility to make the performance test the video showcased into a screensaver due to Moai SDK’s release model. Or at least it’d be too annoying for me to try, and I want to preserve my source files up until a proper release at least.

The two I reblogged, along with this one that I didn’t, put it better than I could myself. I know a few of the people who worked on the thing (like this guy), and I can appreciate the effort that was put into it. Many of them probably were just doing what they were told to do, and that’s that.

One just has to simply realize that the whole team as a whole is not to blame, but rather the people running the production (Zach especially). It potentially could’ve been salvaged in to something more tolerable by an actual competent writer in the early stages (Zach openly admitted to just adding scenes to make it last longer on Everfree in an interview, for better or worse), but at its current stage it is nothing but a big mess of an episode, with no coherent or clear storyline.

Twilight makes an enhancement potion. Why? Just because!
Rainbow Dash immediately wanted to drink and fly fast. Speeed!
PPG crossover? Sort of happens, nothing comes out of it.
Ponyville being blown to smithereens? No problem, just rebuild it!

With such big inconsistencies going on everywhere, the otherwise “alright” memetic jokes (that’s sarcasm) or references actually have more impact on the overall thing than it should. The PPG scene especially being the stupidest thing they pulled off. If they wanted to do a crossover episode, they should’ve embraced it completely, and not just have it as a random part thrown in for good measure. RD having to deal with the major wreckage she caused in Ponyville would’ve made for something MUCH more interesting than what we were given.

Somehow, it COULD have worked, but now that this is basically the “first, true fan produced MLP episode”, it is nothing but a mockery of its source material at best. And it is endorsed by Hasbro and Time Warner, to boot!

So right now, we’ve three decently long animations (not counting the likes of .MOV or such here, for doing something they are better off at), each and every one of them having some meaningful material to learn from for future use:

- Dusk’s Dawn: You can’t put something together lazily without knowing what you’re getting into. Especially don’t expect universal acclaim to come out of it, even if you put a ton of effort to it.
- Snowdrop: Just because something sad happens, it automatically doesn’t make it sad. It is how you control the viewer to care enough for the character, and for this to happen there needs to appropriate amount of build up and explanation. Also: show, don’t tell.
- Double Rainboom: No matter how much talent you’ve got on board on your project, no matter how good the voice acting or animation is, it won’t save the script from ultimately dooming the project.

Out of the three, I’d rank Snowdrop the victor. By a long margin.
Now to just wait for Children of the Night.

While on the subject, I know I’m by far not the best writer or joker around (if I’ve ever implied such, feel free to slap me), as I’m full aware many of my jokes use the same referential style like what DR did. However, an important distionction to make here is that I don’t spend a full year working on a script that any competent writer wouldn’t even dare to touch.

Definitely took an interesting turn and ran with it pretty darn well.

Mando did a fairly good job with the music as well.

The animation and audio were good. Animation didn’t really do anything challenging though, and the areas where they did anything more than basic panning and facial animations were weak (any time there was running was bad). However, the biggest crime was the fuck awful writing and dependence on references. Why did they have 100 people working on this project but not someone who could actually write a story that didn’t rely on references the whole way through?

So as an animation project, it was pretty damn good. As an episode? Awful

Couldn’t have said it better.

Mane6 gets rights to use Skull Girls’ engine free of charge for their new game if SG’s indiegogo gets 725k.

I gotta hand it to LabZero and Mike Z, that despite being an easy money hook to profit from the pony fans, it is still a pretty cool offer. Mane6’s engine of choice (until the C&D letter anyway) was helplessly outdated, didn’t really allow flexibility and had all kinds of other limitations (max res is 640x480, color palette restrictions, etc). It worked for their needs, but now that they need to scrap the graphical assets and start over, I can see that an engine switch would be a very tempting thing. And just getting LabZero’s engine without worrying about hefty licensing fees would be quite something.

You should release the .FLAs of your animations, that would be a cool and useful move for the community. Even if it's over 100mb or 1gb.

You’ll only get bad practises and unhelpful hints out of those.
Checking gbeaudette’s stuff on youtube or downloading the Double Rainboom puppets and checking Flamingo’s puppet tutorial is a better way to get started.
